At the beginning of each year, I take a moment to set specific goals for my four priorities: family, work, friends, and personal well being. Setting goals for not just my career, but also for my life outside of work helps me spend my time based on my priorities. At times, work demands overtake everything else, and other times, family matters take complete precedence over work. So on a day-to-day basis, my life is often far from balanced, but keeping all of my priorities in mind ensures that in the long run, I’ve spent my time in a way that is important to me.
To help me use my time wisely, I’m a big proponent of services that make my life easier. Taking full advantage of such timesavers as using a dry cleaner that delivers, buying groceries on- line, and buying nearly everything else on Amazon, has freed me from most of the errands that used to dominate my weekends. Knowing that thanks to all of the wonderful service providers, my family will have food to eat and clean clothes, I now attend yoga classes without guilt.
I wish I could say that I am always zen and totally focused on my priorities, but it would be an ugly lie. I still get stressed and lose my focus; however, I am confident that in the long run, it will all work out.
