Program Overview
Women’s Energy Network Greater Pittsburgh developed a Mentoring Program in 2019 designed to foster authentic and long-lasting relationships between women in the energy industry. The mentoring program features one-on-one mentoring as well as group coaching. As of the end of 2022, 19 mentor/mentee pairs have completed the program, and it continues to grow every year. Mentors typically comprised of executive-level members all with over 10 years of experience in the energy industry looking to give back to more junior members.

The program duration is approximately 6 months, from May-November.

The Mentoring Program offers the following events:

  • Mentoring Program Introduction (February): This event is an introduction to the WEN Mentoring Program. Organizers walk possible participants through expectations should they choose to participate in the program. Participants from last year's mentoring class share their experiences and answer questions. This is an informational session only and does not automatically enroll you in the program.
  • Mentoring Speed Networking (February and March): This event includes a night of networking and an introduction to others interested in the program. Attendees will be split in half as either potential mentees or mentors. The two groups will be set up directly across from one another and be given 5 minutes to speed network. Participants rotate seats until making it through the entire group or time runs out. Organizers reserve 30 minutes at the end of the event to network with the whole group.
  • Program Signups (April): Anyone who has attended the mentoring introduction, speed networking, or expressed an interest in the program will be sent an application. This application ask for details about your strengths, weaknesses, goals, interests, and area of expertise. You can list individuals that you meshed with well at the networking event and request to be paired with them. Each application is reviewed by the Programming Director and the Mentoring chair, and pairs are made.
  • Pairing Event (May): Kickoff event for the Mentoring Program. This event is for individuals who have already submitted an application to the program. During this event Mentors and Mentees will review the Mentoring workbook and plan out their goals for their experience.
  • Group Meetups (June-November): In addition to the one-on-one mentoring, we also offer monthly meet-ups for program participants only. Group meetups focus on specific topics such as: navigating difficult conversations, setting expectations and holding people accountable, and shifting from a tactical to a strategic leader.
  • Wrap-up Dinner (November/December): Dinner and open discussion between all who participated in the program. This event is where participants reflect on all they have accomplished over the 6 months and share advice for continuing to accomplish those goals.
